Emergency Location Markers

Dane County Parks is installing Emergency Location Marker (ELM) signs along trails in selected park properties. Signs will be installed at trail intersections or at a set distance (ex. every quarter mile).

The goal is that the markers will help streamline emergency response using alphanumeric coordinates based on the US National Grid (USNG). When provided in 9-1-1 calls, the coordinates quickly direct emergency responders to your location on a trail.

How to Use These Signs

Sign Examples

In case of emergency dial 9-1-1 and describe your location. If you are at the parking lot, provide the property address if you have it (often located on kiosk signage) OR if you are on the trail, follow the steps below to use the blue Emergency Location Markers:

  1. Find the Emergency Location Marker sign closest to your location.
  2. Read the 8 large blue numbers in the white box.

Dispatchers will transmit your location to emergency responders. It may take time for responders to reach you.
